Are You Able to Solve It? That Overlooked Netherlands Creation That Forged the Contemporary Globe
One can find numerous contenders to claim the title of “world’s greatest innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to a mechanised sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, constructing a modest merchant vessel required around 10 lumberjacks laboring over 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be produced within seven days.”
Owing to their rapid mechanical cutter, that turned logs to boards using almost no manual labor, the Dutch were able to build vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, which unleashed a century of Dutch naval, economic as well as artistic supremacy in Europe and the globe.
The First True Industrial Device
The inventor's sawmill, contends Dávila, was “humanity’s initial authentic industrial apparatus.” A wind turbine turned a gear. One component converted its circular movement to up-and-down action to power the saw. Another component transformed that same rotary movement into a lateral movement feeding the timber toward the blade. A ratchet system moved the wood forward one precise increment each cycle.
“Each element seemed modest by itself. The Dutchman’s genius was to combine these parts in order that the machine acted within a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting with each descending motion while moving on every return motion. It was a remarkably clever use of fundamental components.”
